This was the error that I was having since a long time. Today I finally took the time to fix it. It turned out to be an other solution I ever imaged. First I thought it was a bug in the NVIDIA drivers so my first attempt was to reinstall the drivers.

With the help of DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) I successfully removed all the drivers from my laptop. And downloaded/installed the most recent ones from the NVIDIA website. But once again the problem was not fixed.

So the next step was Google, I searched for "nvcplui.exe BEX64 c0000417" and then I came across this forum post of NVIDIA. The first fix this guy attempts was the same I already did.

The next fix was to monitor the process that crashes with this handy program.

This program immediately revealed the problem. I had a folder in my Steam installation with a very long name. This caused the BEX64 error. The program also showed where the folder was located.

After deleting the folder the error was gone! So the problem was Steam which is allowing you to create a too long folder name for your backups.
